Public opinion poll - March 1998

This investigation is part of a broader series of studies designed to gauge the population's political attitudes and voting intentions. This series of studies comprises four opinion polls conducted by ICCV between July 1997 and May 1999. It should be noted that the research instruments used were not identical across the entire series of polls; the items included in the questionnaires were adapted to the political reality at the time the survey was conducted. Nevertheless, all the instruments used contain sets of common items, which allow, to some extent, for the dynamic study of the population's attitudes and opinions, particularly with regard to: - Subjective assessment of the country's economic situation;- subjective assessment of one's own economic situation;- optimism regarding the country's overall situation.the chosen approach-that of using items that do not allow for comparisons between the results of successive surveys-was adopted because the purpose of the surveys was not to investigate political attitudes over time or to make comparisons from one point in time to another, but rather to capture the attitudes and opinions of the population in response to various events taking place on the national and international political scene and to assess the extent to which these events influence the population's electoral choices. Conducted at a time when public attention was focused on the turmoil caused by disagreements within the governing coalition-specifically between the PD and the prime minister at that time -Victor Ciorbea-the questionnaire used to collect data contained numerous sets of items designed to investigate the public's attitude toward this issue.the questionnaire addressed the following areas: - Subjective assessment of the country's economic situation; - subjective assessment of one's own economic situation; - optimism regarding the country's overall situation; - attitude toward the Government's performance;- attitudes toward political parties and political leaders;- trust in political figures;- voting intentions
