The 2004 reproductive health study in Romania is the fourth study on reproductive health conducted in Romania since 1990. The data included in the study provide an assessment of reproductive health interventions in Romania and help identify trends in specific indicators, with a focus on access to health services, particularly those for mothers and children. Furthermore, the study serves as an essential database for setting priorities for future interventions in the health system and for new assistance programs. A new feature of this study is that it includes a special chapter dedicated to evaluating health services, including the barriers the population faces in accessing them. This study was designed to meet the following objectives: - To assess the current situation regarding fertility among the sample of women, abortion, the need for contraceptive services, and other aspects of reproductive health in Romania; - to enable policymakers, program managers, and researchers to evaluate and improve existing programs and develop new strategies; - to measure changes in fertility rates, contraceptive prevalence, breastfeeding, use of induced abortion, accessibility and use of family planning services, and to study the factors influencing these changes; - to measure access to health services, with an emphasis on primary care services, particularly the impact of the development of reproductive health services over the past five years; - to update data on the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of young people aged 15-24 regarding reproductive health; - to provide information on the level of knowledge regarding the transmission and prevention of stis, including HIV/AIDS, and on attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS (stigmatization and discrimination); - to provide information on domestic violence and identify the determinants of verbal, physical, and sexual abuse; - to identify at-risk groups and direct future reproductive health studies toward groups exhibiting high-risk reproductive behavior.
