International ESS conference

An international academic conference will be organised at the University of Bucharest, between 20 and 21 October 2016, to showcase research undertaken using data from the European Social Survey (ESS).

One of the aims of the conference is to demonstrate the usefulness of social science research and the value of its research outputs for decision makers in the process of creating evidence based policies for critical societal systems like education, health, justice and public policies in general.

European Social Survey is one of the pan-European research facilities that are acknowledged as a priority for Europe, in the research infrastructures list published by ESFRI - European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures. The majority of research infrastructures on the ESFRI list belong to physical sciences and engineering, energy, environment, or health and food, and many are formally organised as an ERIC - European Research Infrastructures Consortium.

In social sciences and humanities, there are five priority infrastructures: ESS, CESSDA, SHARE, CLARIN and DARIAH. The European Social Survey ERIC was recently recognised as a landmark project for the ESFRI list, as a major factor of competitiveness of the European Research Area, to receive continuous support for successful completion and operation.

Romania participated in two of eight rounds of the ESS project (in 2006 - Round 3 and in 2008 - Round 4), and has not been participating ever since. For the social science academic community in Romania this kind of surveys is necessary, not only for rich data that will be produced, but also to maintain the vital collaboration with the international community of researchers.

Another aim of this conference, therefore, is to discuss opportunities to re-initiate the Romanian participation in ESS as well as in other European research infrastructures for social sciences in the context of the objectives of Horizon 2020 research and innovation Framework Programme to tackle the grand challenges and combine efforts from different sciences to solve real life, societal problems.

For the social sciences to successfully join those efforts, data is vitally needed to create an accurate image of the current situation in the Romanian society, and to allow comparisons with other European countries.
